Vcenter 5.5 Storage blade Full

Hi Experts:

the Environnement is : Vcenter 5.5 , hosts ESxi 5.5 and Storage equalogic  Dell PS6100   ( Topology Iscsi SAN )

we don't have anymore space in our PS100 , few Gigabits still there Smiley Happy .what do you propose as solution to extend this storage Blade ? all the Slots are occupied and we use the maximum disk size capacity  .

some suggesions please

About EQL

- You have to ensure that the Group/Pool have 5% or 200Gb of capacity left. Otherwise you will see unexpected behaviour from the array

- IIRC every Volumes comes with 5% snapshot space. If you dont use Snaps on the array you can reduce it to 0%. Otherwise just resize it to your current needs

- You can switch to Thin volumes on eql to free up the space which is left at the end and you would like to see as free space for a ESXi Datastore.  Makes only sence of the volume isnt written up to its 100%

Some thoughts

Your vSphere 5.5 runs out of support this month

EQL goes EndOfSale later this year.  Development stops 2 years ago. So the plattform is dead in the water

We moved to Dell SC(Compellent) and small setups use the SAS modells and larger Environments use iSCSI/FC.

1) If the environment is thin provisioned, you might be able to free up some space if the VMs are not using all the allocated space in actual.

2) If purchasing a new enterprise grade storage array is not feasible, setup something free such as FreeNAS or OpenFiler to run the non-critical VMs so that the existing array can be used for the critical workload.

As an immediate action, do a review and perform some clean up. Example, delete snapshots if not needed, delete unwanted VMs etc. For time being use FreeNAS or OpenFiler to run the non-critical VMs as suggested by Supreet. For long term I would recommend you to plan and procure additional enterprise grade storage. You can also think of using Hyper Converged Infrastructure with VMware vSAN if it suits your environment, it will have combination of compute and storage and highly scale able.

Check if you have any VMs with Snapshots, that might take lot of space on storage.

Without further details, and requirements, the only recommendation that I can give is "Time to go shopping!" Smiley Wink

To give you an advice, one needs to exactly know the current environment, and the requirements for the future (current capacity, proposed growth, performance requirements, network bandwidth, ...). Is the storage only being accessed by ESXi hosts, or is it accessed by other operating systems too?

It's also important to be aware of the current support status for your hardware, i.e. whether support agreements for the current hardware are going to expire, and need to be renewed in the near future. This is something that needs to be taken into account from a cost perspective. Sometime it makes more sense to purchase a new system, rather than to renew support for the old one.

This is a limitation at storage end as there are no free disk slots, if you want to expand the Storage, you have to procure a new box and connect it. Or else as said above you may do some housekeeping tasks to cleanup free space, you may try the following

1. Delete snapshots

2. Delete unused data and VMs

3. Power off the vms which are not in use, this will help you to claim the storage space occupied by the vswap file of the VMs

however cleanup is just a temporary solution, in a long run, if you have a requirement of more storage space, it is much needed to procure new storage devices.
