VMDK Files

Dear All,

Facing weird issue in my VM Environment. We are having VM Environment with 13 VMs including vCenter server which is installed on server 2012. Until yesterday everything was fine. Today morning I found that VMDK files of other VMs have been attached to one VM on which vCenter server is installed and the snapshot backup through VDP is failing for this VM. I tried to remove the VMDK files by shutting down the affected VM. But only two VMDKs got removed and other are not getting removed giving below error:

"Cannot remove virtual disk from the virtual machine because it or one of its parent disks is part of a snapshot of the virtual machine."

What can be best possible way to get rid of this considering below constraints:

1. Other VMs are working fine as of now so don't want to tease them.

2. Can't shutdown any of the VMs except the affected VM.

Can any of the following resolve the issue!

1. If i delete the last snapshot of all VMs , will i be able to delete the VMDKs attached to the VM.

2. If I restore the last successful snapshot of affected VM along with configuration will it remove the HDDs as those hard disks have been attached this morning only.

Regards,

Hiren Shinde.

You can consolidate all snapshots and if the process failed, restore last backup of VM if any backup is available for that.

All the VM's snapshots have been successfully consolidated. Will I be able to remove the VMDKs now!.

Also if I restore the VM Snapshot with config files will it remove those HDDs and is it possible to restore the snapshot to original location without turning off source VM!

Today morning I found that VMDK files of other VMs have been attached to one VM on which vCenter server is installed and the snapshot backup through VDP is failing for this VM.

It looks like the vCenter Server VM acts as a Hot-Add proxy for VDP. What you may do in such a case is to ensure that the VDP process for this backup isn't still running, and then detach the VM's virtual disk from the vCenter Server's settings (Do not select Remove from disk!).

Once that is done, you should be able to consolidate the affected VM's snapshots. If consolidation doesn't do the job, create a new snapshot, and then run "Delete All" from the VM's Snapshot Manager".

Thanks. I tried that but disks are not getting removed. But the issue has been resolved now.

What I have done is rather than restoring Image from VDP, I have restored hard disk of the affected VM from VDP.

And it automatically created related VM and all other hard disks are not attached anymore with restored VM.

Thanks a lot for all of you for sharing your expert advice.

You poeple are simply awesome.

Hiren Shinde.
