Use same datastore with different Esxi hosts

Good morning,

I recently installed a Hpe server with Esxi 6.7 update 3; it runs five VMs. The datastore has been created through Iscsi on a LUN created in a Synology Nas, dedicated to provide the storage space for the VMs.

We have three Synology nas (two in high availability and one for backup/disaster recovery) so the storage system is secure and reliable.

However due to budget limitations we have only one virtualization server; so we thought to reuse the old server (a Hp 385 Gen 7) as a secondary virtualization host, to use only in emergency situations.

Esxi 6.7 doesn't support the CPU of the old server so i installed Esxi 6.5 .

Is it possible to configure Esxi 6.5 on the same Iscsi target (so on the same LUN) used by the main virtualization server? Will it find the already created datastore? What about the registration of the existing Virtual machines?

Thank you.

Yes you can mount the same iSCSI  LUN on that 2nd. Server. VMFS is a cluster file so no problem here. The Host mount the datastore automatically.  For sure you should not register the VM the same time on both Hosts!

Note: You need to stay on vHW 13 if you ever would like to register and start a VM from 6.7 on the old 6.5 Host.

Joerg
