Upgrading Vsphere 6.0 to 6.5

Jump to solution

We are looking to upgrade one of our 4x ESX 6.0 hosts to 6.5 to use this host to help upgrade our 6.0 environment to 7.0.

Is there anything documented around the process to do this that you could point me to?

Is it even possible, and what would the considerations be?

Thanks in advance !

We ended up upgrading the VCenter Server from 6.0 to 6.5 which then allowed our 7.0 Infrastructure to see the old Cluster, so this is now allowing us to vMotion across from our old environment to new.

There are many option available for an upgrade.

It actually depends on your current installation, i.e. whether it's a vanilla VMware setup, or a vendor specific installation, using a vendor specific installation image with additional hardware related drivers, and tools. It is also necessary to know whether the hosts are currently managed by vCenter Server (which version).

Also make sure that ESXi 7.0 supports your hardware!

Take a look at the hardware compatibility guide and the interoperability matrix to make sure your hardware is supported. These are always a good place to start when looking at upgrading.
