Unable to attach vmdk file a new vm after original vm crashed

I have esxi 6.5 and run number of ubuntu vms. I tried to install vm tools on one vm but something happened and I was not able to restart it, it looks like it crashed. I unregistered the vm, created a new one and tried to add a drive to it by picking an existing vmdk file as the article suggested. Unfortunately, I was not able to do it. The system does not show me existing vmdk files as available for this operation. When I go to the datastore browser I see 2 vmdk files:

1. -000002-delta.vmdk

2. -flat.vmdk

but these files are not being displayed when i try to pick them while installing new drive. I think a descriptor file or something else got corrupted. Need urgent help. Please advise. thanks

If these are the only .vmdk files, then you need to manually recreate the required descriptor files.

If you want/need assistance, run ls -lisa > filelist.txt from a command line in the VM's folder, then download filelist.txt as well as the VM's .vmx file from the datastore. Then compress/zip the two files and attach the .zip archive to your next reply.
