Snapshot over VMware ESXi 6.5 takes a long time in the web client (if VM is running)

Hello there,

I have a question about snapshopts from VMware ESXi 6.5 Server...

We have the latest available version for ESXi (and all patches that are online). The server hardware also has the latest bios.

Taking a snapshot from a VMs takes an incredibly long time (60 minutes for a VM of 500 Gb) - over Web Client. When the VM is off, the snapshot takes only a few seconds.

We are connected via iSCSI via 1x 10 Gb LAN (fd) connection. The storage currently has nothing to do (no other servers are connected), and it's an SSD solution. The storage runs well because the snapshots of disconnected VMs take only seconds.

Does anyone have an idea what it can be?

Server:

ESXi 6.5.0 Update 1 (Build 7388607)

Manufacturer: FUJITSU

Model: PRIMERGY RX4770 M3

CPU: 88 CPUs x Intel Xeon CPU E7-8880 v4 @ 2.20GHz

Memory: 2 TB

iSCSI Type: VMFS6

Storage:

Disk: 200 TB

Software: OPEN E Data Storage Software V7

What am I doing wrong?

Many Thanks!

Andy

Hi Andy!

It is possible that you'll take snapshots including the memory?

That could take longer regarding the size of the memory.

VMware Knowledge Base

Snip:

Memory: If the flag is 1 or true, a dump of the internal state of the virtual machine is included in the snapshot. Memory snapshots take longer to create, but allow reversion to a running virtual machine state as it was when the snapshot was taken. This option is selected by default. If this option is not selected, and quiescing is not selected, the snapshot will create files which are crash-consistent, which you can use to reboot the virtual machine.

Note: When taking a memory snapshot, the entire state of the virtual machine will be stunned. For more information, see Taking a snapshot with virtual machine memory renders the virtual machine to an inactive state while...
