SQL cluster on VMware (Heartbit connection)

Hi,

in an onpremise environment until Windows 2008 we always used a heartbeat NIC.

From Windows 2012 the heartbit is not mandatory as we can use the LAN NIC.

In VMware environment when we create a cluster what is the recommendation? Create a NIC connected to a dedicated vSwitch between the VMs in the same cluster.

My environment is Windows 2019.

Thank you.

Hi there,

You can use the same vnic, or create a new vnic even in the same portgroup. If you want to use a separate vlan for that traffic you also can do that and use a new vnic connected to this new portgroup.

This is the recommended setting  where two nics are the best approach. (So you can use two on the same portgroup or use separate portgroups, that depends on you)
