Remove RDM disks

Question :

Retiring a VM and would like to know the best procedure for removing the RDM disks from the esxi hosts.

Once you have the RDM Lun list, you can directly detach the devices from ESXi host. ESXi host generally dont do any read write on physical RDM luns.

So basically shutdown the guest OS of the vm, delete the vm, then go to each esxi and remove the RDM disks?

Yes,

1. Shutdown the VM

2. Identify the RDM LUN details from VM settings.

3. Once you have the RDM details ,delete the VM

4. Detach the LUNs from ESXi storage devices tab.

The steps are explained in https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2004605​. The KB article also covers detaching a RDM from ESXi hosts.

Steps are:

  1. make sure that the RDM LUN is not in use anymore (i.e. either delete the VM, or delete the RDM from the VM's configuration)
  2. detach the RDM LUN from each host
  3. unpresent the LUN on the storage
  4. perform a rescan on the hosts
  5. do a cleanup on the hosts using the "esxcli storage core device detached ..." command
