Is there a problem with the datastore with these virtual machines?

Do you have any vms missing? They are invalid because vcenter thinks they are there, but they aren't in the datastore. If not you can't delete them, but you should be able to remove them from inventory.

From the screenshot, I assume that the 3 VMs existed on the datastore before the restore!?

What I guess is that the datastore has been restored, resignatured, and then the 3 - previously registered VMs - have been re-registered. If this is the case, the 3 unknown entries in the inventory are most likely stale pointers to the VM's .vmx files, which cannot be found anymore due to the resignatured datastore.

In this case you may simply remove the unknown entries from the inventory.
