Number of vSphere customers / active installations

Hi all,

does anyone have a clue of how many active installations of vSphere are out there? How many standalone (licensed) ESXi hosts?

To put things in perspective - if you were to create an application that requires vSphere to operate, what would be your target market size?

I only managed to find vague numbers like 500.000+ customers of VMware in total etc. which is rather useless

You're not ever going to get any accurate numbers for this because it's private information held by VMware.

How about rough numbers? Let us start with those 500.000 customers. How many of those use vSphere? Roughly 100.000?

I'm quite sure somebody must have done these calculations before.

Again, VMware internal figures you're asking for, which no one has and no one is probably going to share.
