  • 1.  Nested ESXi lab - hosts can not ping one and other

    Hi all -

I have created a nested ESXi lab with ESXi 6.5 hosts nested on ESXi 6.0 (for testing purposes)

The nested ESXi hosts are all on one physical ESXi 6.0 server. Each nested ESXi is connecting to a Port Group ("VM Network") on a VMware Standard vSwitch that has promiscuous mode, forged transmits, and MAC Address changes all set to accept.

Each of the nested ESXi Hosts can ping everything else on the network (172.16.0.0/16), including other ESXi hosts, but not each other?

What am I missing? This is a simple setup so far - no VMs, just host interconnect problems!

    HELP!!?

Here's my physical host network properties. All of the nested ESXi hosts have only one NIC on cloud026-026 PortGroup

OK - Finally figured it out!

The three Nested ESXi Hosts were cloned from a master! Even though they got new MAC addresses in the cloning process, and I manually assigned IP/hostname to each - there was a remaining (and undetermined) conflict - I suspect something in /etc/vmware/esx.conf

The resolution was to "Reset System Configuration" of each cloned/nested ESXi using the DCUI before applying the IP/hostname.

Now all the nested ESXi 6.5 can ping/network with one and other!
