Issues with vm consolidation with insufficient disk space

I am working with ESXi 6.0 vsphere client. I have already performed the remove all snapshots in order to get my vms back up and running because it ran out of space. I have removed the backup software creating the issue. But I still see large files in the datastore:

XXX-000001.vmdk through 0000028.vmdk all in the 1-2GB range.

I ran the consolidate but got the error of insufficient space. The datastore mentions only having 30GB free.

My question is, whats the easiest way to consolidate these vm's? Is there anyway I can add a external harddrive to the server to get this done? If I have to expand the disks in the raid (RAID 10) is there a way to add the larger harddrives in a way to minimize downtime? And keep all the settings and vms in tact without reformatting and recovering from backup? There has to be a easy way to accomplish this consolidation.

Prior to recommending actions, it's important to get an overview.

  • are there any other datastores available? If yes, with how much free disk space?
  • how many VM's are running on that host/datastore, and how much memory did you assign to them?
  • please post a complete list of files in the VM's folder, i.e. the output of the command ls -lisa
  • compress/zip the VM's .vmx, .vmsd, *.log, and .vmdk files (only the small descriptor .vmdk files), and attach the .zip archive to a reply post

For the mentioned command, and to download the files, enable SSH in the host's security settings, and use e.g. putty and WinSCP.
