Is there a nice easy method of deploying template VM's directly into a specific AD OU.  I was looking at the "Customization Manager" but the section for "run once" scripts comes prior to the section related to joining the VM to the domain.

Not unless you're using either vRO or vRA, and even then you still have to do some work.

I looked into using a custom sysprep answer file, I found something suggesting that it might be possible but it involved embedding credentials into a file which would not be approved of.  Also I believe I would loose the ability to pass the name from VMware into the VM.

Was this something you had previously looked into yourself just out of curiosity mate?  I imagine it would be a fairly popular feature if it existed.

No, because when you get into this type of stuff, the game becomes one of automation and I prefer to use the right tool for the job.

I see, is vCO still a free tool?  I vaguely recollect it is/was

If you have a license to vCenter, it's included.
