Inplace upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 to 2012 R2

Hi all,

I wanted to do a Inplace upgrade from some VMs with Windows Server 2008 R2 installed and a paravirtual SCSI Driver. After upgrading the System doesn't boot anymore and crashes with a BSOD, message inaccessible boot device or critical process died. After changing the SCSI Controller to LSI SAS the System boots again.

What is here the Problem? Does the upgrade kick out the  paravirtual Driver? How can I avoid that behaviour? The inplace upgrade is successfull when I cahnge the SCSI controler before the upgrade to the LSI SAS und change it back again to paravirtual after the upgrade.

I hate doing in place upgrades and avoid where possible. Seems like something always goes wrong, especially in a virtualized software environment. I don't have any solid evidence of this, but I would imagine (like you said), that during the upgrade the drivers are either a.) kicked out or b.) obsolete/out-dated since VMtools has now become out-dated. Again, not solid evidence just an opinion.
