Increase datastore capacity

Hi,

am getting "No devices with free space" message after expanding ESXi 6.5 VM hard disk size, any idea why?

I tried to rescan all storage devices but still have the same issue.

Please run the partedUtil get, and getUsableSectors commands (i.e. step 5, and 7) again, but this time without the partition number ":3".

How big is the  HDD or how big is the volume?

Hard disk presented to ESXi VM has been Expanded to 72GB. (HDD size is 120GB)

Not sure why ESXi is not seeing the availability of free disk space that can be used to increase the datastore capacity.

Maybe ESXi is looking for new disks instead of expanding the current datastore on the current disk?

If you do not have free space in your data store so  you will not be able expand the disk in VM.

you need to add new hard drive to expand your data store.

Could you please share screen shot of data store .....

So say I have ESXi on a VM with one disk size of 32GB. The datastore on ESXi will be of 32GB.

Then I increase the VM disk to 72Gb, shouldn't the Datastore be able to detect such change and expand to 72GB capacity?

As per best practice .

If you do not have much free space to assign to vm disk , First you have to expand esxi data store size than after you can increase Vm desk size.

Expanding a VMFS datastore on the installation disk needs to be done from the command line.

tried to follow the document but not sure how to proceed to understand the PartitionNumber (4258? seems large) NewStartingSector and NewEndingSector for the command"

# partedUtil resize "/vmfs/devices/disks/Device" PartitionNumber NewStartingSector NewEndingSector
