Topic Name : Configure License Settings for vCenter Server

Publication Name : vCenter Server and Host Management

Product/Version : VMware vSphere/6.7

Question :

I need to know if we want to have e.g. two vcenter servers like in cluster with external controller how many licenses do we need? If we have two sites and each site we want to have redundancy(two node servers) do we need two licenses or four licenses?  Regards

vCenter Server is licenses per Instance.. so if you would like to install 2 or more vCenter Servers in your Organization you need multiple vCenter licenses. A external PSC is covered by the vCenter Instance license.

Note: VMware says the deployment of external PSCs is deprecated and shout avoid in future deployments.

Hint:

- A single vCenter supports a couple of thousands ESX Hosts

- vCenter Sandard(Foundation?) supports VCSA HA which let you setup a "standby vCenter".  You need a deployment modell of "small" or greater and there is no additional license fee.

- vSphere HA only needs vCenter for setup and configuration. HA can and will protect ESXi Clusters when connection to vCenter is not available or vCenter dies with the ESXi Host
