vCenter Server 5.5.0
I choose to clone an existing, and running VM
It has placed a new VM in the host list, but it's not editable, powerable...
What did I do wrong?
Rich:smileyblush:
Did you clone it to a template? Templates cannot be edited or powered on, only cloned from. if you right click on the unusable VM, is there an option to convert to Virtual Machine?
I right clicked a production VM, and picked "Clone"
no options to do anything with it really..no power on, no EDIT..
😮
disregard: I finally saw the status on th ebottom of the screen showing "Copying Virtual Machine Files"
sorry!
Oh yeah, that will do it. It has to make a full copy of all the virtual disk files before it finished the clone and it can be used. That can take a long time depending on the size of VM and speed of your storage.
lesson learned!
Cloning has two types.
Clone to VM and Clone to template.Clone to VM can editable ,Clone to template can't editable.
It's the normal behavior of the virtual machine, if you run any task on the VM, virtual machines options are grayed out until the task is finished. ie -commit or delete Snapshots, storage vMotion. You will notice power setting and edit setting of the virtual machine is grayed out. In this case, the new virtual machine did not finish the cloning task.
