How to rduce the number of CPU's on a vm?

Hi All

Sorry, probably a silly question but quite new to this. One of our VM's currently has a CPU count of 6 and a socket count of 2 and it has 'Enable CPU Hot Add' tick box ticked and we run vsphere 6.5.

We want to reduce the cpu count to 4 but when we go to edit settings and go to the CPU count it will only let us increase the count and NOT reduce it to 4. I was wondering if we need to turn the server off to be able to reduce the cpu count?

Looking forward to anyone that can help.

Yes, you must *always* shut down the VM to remove vCPUs. There is no such thing as "hot remove". The OS is irrelevant.
