VM logs will be in the below location.

vmfs/volumes/<VM_reside_datastore> / <VM_folder> / vmware.log

for more information: Locating virtual machine log files on an ESXi/ESX host (1007805)

Before even you look into logs, what type of connection failure is some thing that you need to understand .

There are many ways to troubleshoot VM .

issue c could be with :

-->Console access

-->Network connection

-->Storage issue

-->Underlying guest issue

-->For guest related issue, vmware.log would be best , which you can locate in the datastore where VM's disks residing

-->For storage related issue, vmkernel and hostd.log would give you more insights

-->Network related , is best in the way you Digg more than logs.
