Failed upgrade of vCenter (appliance) from 5.5 to 6.5u1

We ran through the upgrade today and it failed at stage 2 with the following below.  After reviewing the logs with VMware support, they concluded our SSO account "Administrator@vsphere.local" was the cause.  The previous admin person had created with a different username, for example, "isman1" instead of "administrator".  Support concluded there was noway around it.  Can somebody confirm this?

We tried resetting the password ("Administrator") on the cli of the vCenter and we continued with the upgrade but it didn't get anywhere. Also saw the article of resetting the service inventory but was highly advised not to proceed.

Error: Error attempting Backup SPBM Data

Resolution: Please check InvSvc upgrade logs for details.

Thanks,

TT

We rolled back (restored) the vCenter prior to upgrade at the request of support.

It is because of the inventory service failed to backup properly.. The log snippet you have shared is shown in the inventory log.

You can try to reset inventory service on the 5.5 vcenter however before that you need to verify the "IMPORTANT" SECTION in the below KB before performing the job

VMware Knowledge Base

Only if you dont know things mentioned in the KB then proceed with that and then perform the upgrade.

Thanks,

MS

MS,

Myself and support did review that KB/article but didn't proceed.  Also looks like it mentioned for vCenter on Windows. We have an appliance.

If you are using VCSA, then you can try this steps in the kb VMware Knowledge Base

Note : Ensure to take snapshot on VCSA before changes
