Hi folks,
i am gathering few information here to expand an ESXi host that is standalone server.
It is a HP proliant server with RAID 5 and i have ordered additional disk to expand the existing RAID.
I am wondering if there is anyway for me to expand it without downtime?
Or if this not possible without downtime, perhaps a way to expand the existing RAID?
I could create another RAID but i dont want to go into that.
Appreciate your advise.
Cheers.
It depends, sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. It often comes down to if the controller supports online expansion. The only advice I would give you before you decide to extend your array is to make doubly sure YOU HAVE BACKED UP EVERYTHING on that local datastore. Do full VM backups of everything and plan for failure.
You can manage RAID configuration from command line. There is an utility from HPE - hpacucli.
Check it.
The Windows ACU and the SmartStart ACU has always made it really easy to expand an array with a few mouse clicks, but there is a horrendous amount of time needed for the stripes to be rebuilt.
I have always found it faster to just suck everything out of a box, destroy and re-create a brand spanking new array, and then push everything back to the new storage.
As great as hpacucli appears for linux use, I'm not entirely sure how this would fare during a live running bare metal hypervisor as ESXi.
Since I certainly hope you are going to be backing up the array anyways before experimenting with the hpacucli, you need to make the call how long a stripe rebuild can take vs the old fashioned way as I described.
Please do keep us posted on your experience and outcome.
hi guys,
apologies as i only came back here after a while.
so the hp utility hpssacli does the wonder-managed to expand the raid without any issue!
although i had some doubt it could be worst and i had to restore back all configurations from vicfgbackup i made

Or for ESXi 6.5 you can use the below.
Esxcli ssacli cmd -q “Command name”
To covert from old syntax to new syntax, please review example.
Old style:
/opt/smartstorageadmin/ssacli/bin/ssacli ctrl slot=0 pd all show detail
New style:
Esxcli ssacli cmd -q “Controller slot=0 pd show detail”
