Esxi Trail license over expired Real license

Hello Everybody,

A bare metal server was installed esxi 6.7 and had licensed with Real License. the license is expired. If a esxi trail license which is for 60 Days will be put there then will this Esxi work for 60 Days?

Scenario is so: only one Esxi is installed on a Bare Metal server, there is no vCenter installed anywhere. And the Esxi licensed is expired, now how can i make it run with trail or evaluation license?

Thanks in Advance

Your choices are 1,3,4.

Mostlikely "2" is not a option anymore when your installation date is greater than 60 days. But the GUI will tell you if something is left from the Eval Mode.

There is no conversion. You can "switch" the licenses within minutes if you have the licences around. Each License is based on an type of edition aka vSphere ESXi Standard, Enterprise plus or when speaking about Free license its based on "vSphere ESXi Hypervisor".  Each edition have its own feature set. The ESXi disable the features if you change the license and the license contains other features.  The switch doesnt work if one of the features is in use or just configurated. So if you have vMotion,HA,DRS enabled for example you have to disable it first and than you can apply a license which doesnt contain vMotion,HA,DRS like ESXi Hypervisor or vSphere Essentials for example.

Deadlock4700,

Yes, you can replace the license of your host. If the feature set in the new license is less than the previous one you will get a warning, but it will still allow you to replace the license. If the license has expired and you don't have a vCenter I think you may need to reboot the host for the new license to become 100% active (to be able to start VMs).

Hello larstr

Thank you for your rapid reply.

As per your saying, now i can get a vSphere license from MyVmware account , then have to put it into that Esxi...is that so and reboot the Esxi bare metal.

Yes, Deadlock4700.

That's correct. With vCenter you wouldn't need the reboot, and maybe you don't need it on 6.5 or 6.7 with only the host either. It's been a while since I replaced the license for a host without vCenter.

There is no ESXi Bare Metal reboot needed. Just insert the right license into the gui or even command line and your Host is back into the buisiness.

But there is maybe a small misunderstanding

1. Payed license

2. Eval Mode

3. Trial aka Timelimited License (have a fixed end date)

4. Free License Key

The Eval mode start with day one and it doesnt matter if you have  apply one of the 3 other types in the meantime. So you can never switched back to Eval mode if your Host runs longer than the 60 days after the initial installation. Within the first 60 days you can change from or into Eval Mode as you want without a reboot. But Eval becomes unavailable after 60 days. It doesnt matter if you have a vCenter or not.

Hello IRIX201110141

Thank you for your reply with license info.

As you said  four license type for vSphere -

1. Payed license

2. Eval Mode

3. Trial aka Timelimited License (have a fixed end date)

4. Free License Key

So, in my case, i am sure now it's number 3 mean Trial aka Timelimited License (have a fixed end date). So now is there any way, free license or Eval License will work on it?

And whatever the license type is, if other type input then will the license convert into that?
