EVC modes from vCenter or ESXi version

question:

Are the EVC modes available tied ONLY to vCenter version or vCenter and ESXI version.

For example:

vCenter 6.0 does NOT support Broadwell

vCenter 6.5 does support Broadwell

If I have vCenter 6.5 with ESXi 6.0 Can I use the Broadwell EVC mode on the cluster made up of only ESXi 6.0 members.  (Yes, we are planning on upgrading soon.)

This KB Article:  https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1003212

DOES NOT mention ESXi version at all.

EVC capabilities of your server are based on two factors:

  1. The version of vCenter Server that manages the host.
  2. The underlying CPU architecture of the host processor.

In the end, the maximum EVC level that can be configured for an ESXi host depends on its CPU, no matter which vCenter Server is used.

Its vCenter which brings the selectable EVC Mode. Yes vCenter 6.0 latest doesnt comes with a mode for Broadwell.

I the old days you have to configure CPUID feature flags manually directly on the ESX Host. For me it looks easier to update vCenter to 6.5 and leave Hosts on 6.0. Yes the Host Version doesnt matter.
