ESXi vm's can't ping (looks isolated)

I have total 4 VM's on ESXI.

- WinXP

- Win7

- Win2008R2 (DC on same  vm)

and another win2008 server workstation, but about to join domain..

However, as i was about to test pings replies, Winxp and Win 7 can ping and reply to each other.. but the other 2 server OS : Win2008 can't see one another.

however, i can ping from any desktop system, and they get reply ok..

My set up in ESXI is as follows:

VM Connected vNic>>> Associated  Port group name connected,

Portgroup connected to vswitch1, which is connected to host only physical NIC on host

Firewalls are all disabled on problem VM's and gateway is set across all VM: 192.168.117.1

Any suggestions ?  I do notice i on windows 2008 server i cannot keep 'Network Discovery: enabled under Network Sharing Center.. This could be the reason. but not sure..

Solved..

I had to enable SSH shell and edit .vmx file :

ESXI 5.5 static mac address “conflicts with VMware reserved MACs” | Syed Jahanzaib Personal Blog to ...

I thought manual change to MAC address would fix it, but i couln't update it from GUI.. So had to do with via SSH.

All good Smiley Happy

Hi TECH198,

Have you tried from each guest pinging the default gateway? Are they all able to get a response to this?

Kind regards.

I've seen something similar to this in ESXi 6.5 U2 after a cluster update.  I had an AD server (running newest VMware tools, WS2012 R2) that all of a sudden couldn't reach the network.  I fixed by doing an "edit settings" on the VM, disconnecting the network adapter from the network, committing the change and reconnecting the network and committing the change.  It's happened twice to me so far.

I haven't researched it farther than that at this time.

Actually no...

I have 2 vNics as I prefer having all my VM's on NFS drive on my NAS due to space to limited space on SSD.

So for that alone i have "bridged access" 192.168.1.x i login to ESXi with

I create vSwitch 1 pointing to second Nic, which is host only, and all VM's which don't require internet, most of them except windows 7, have just the one nic to port group

i can ping DNS, and no problem though..

So, to recap: All VM's , except Windows 7 has one vNic (Private) (Host only) but without external, they should be able o still see one another...

Most of then can, but not the servers. even though they themselves, can get pinged from other windows VM's ok.

I'm not sure what  those duplicate MAC address are, but could explain a bit

However, this is on DC.

Just *one* vNic.

Hi there,

Yes the two MAC addresses doesn't seem normal. Can you expand the "Network Adapter 1" and see if this also contains duplicate MAC addresses here?

Also are you able to upload the VM configuration file (VMX) and attach to this thread?

Kind regards.
