ESXi 6.5 new Windows 2012 guest - no VMXNET 3 and other network devices

Hello,

I have an ESXi 6.5 host. I watched quite a few videos on how to create a new VM guest (Windows 2012 Server for example). I see people having various network adapters like VMXNET3, etc. All I see is the default VM Network group which I have setup up with all 4 vmnics as teaming. The uplinks are connected. When I finished building this VM guest I seems to have defaulted to the E1000 network adapter. I am probably missing something here, would anyone try to guide me here? I've install VM Tools on the host, but still cannot add another network adapter, only the "VM network" one.

My network is made up of two port groups:

1) VM Network

2) Management

Both are on vSwitch0 and that is linked to vmnic0 - vmnic3.

You will see my Win 2012 network adapter.

Thanks,

Richard

The VM network what your see there is the port group name comes from the virtual switch, it doesnt indicate your virtual nic (VNIC) type. Inorder to change the vnic while creating the VM you have to click the down icon and change the nic type as given in the attached image .

since you have the VM already created and installed OS, you need not create a new VM, right click the VM and edit settings, there you will get the option to add hardware, add new virtual nics and choose the type you want (E1000 or vmxnet). Once that is created , you may remove the old vnics.
