Converting 6.x licenses to 7.x

Background: We currently have 5 vSphere 6 enterprise plus licenses.

if I understand correctly we can upgrade our licenses as long as we have active support. I've done it with previous jumps from 5.x to 6.x. It sounds like 7.x has a new license scheme where they need one license per socket/CPU. So does anyone know how the upgrade of the 6.x licenses would work?

If we have 5 licenses now would it convert to 2.5!? or would it be one to one and we'd have to purchase additional licenses?

What happens when you apply one license to a two socket system? Does it complain, only license it partially?

ESXi licensing has always been socket based, the only change that came with vSphere 7 is the 32 core/socket limitation for a single license.
