Guys, I use vmkfstools a bit when I need to clone a .vmdk to thin from thick etc. Sometimes though I'd have to user vmware converter when I want to create a new .vmdk based on the guest partitions/volumes. For example, sometimes an admin might oversize a .vmdk and the guest volume mapped to same will have too much space (wastage) i.e. they create a thick .vmdk of 100Gb and a guest partition on 100Gb but only 25 Gb is really needed in the guest. This is a waste of space so sometime we power these VMs off and convert them to machines with the same name using VMWare Converter. This allows us to assign a new smaller .vmdk and matching guest OS partition.
Is there a quick way from the command line i.e to clone the guest partition as vmware converter allows from its UI?
VMware converter is your best bet but i had this interesting post in my archives on how to shrink the VMDK's

Thanks for the reply. I don't see any options for the guest partition conversion though. Just options to clone the .vmdk to thin or thick. Am I missing something?
