Changing vSwitch Uplink from 1gb Ethernet to 10GB SFP w/ Ethernet Failover

Hi,

I have a tiny setup: two HP Proliant esxi hosts and vsphere 7.0.3 to configure them. My uplink it a single 10gb ethernet from my switch. I'd like to make this 1gb SFP but keep the ethernet as a failover.

I think this is how to do it, but I'd appreciate someone telling me I'm risking loops or misconfigurations at any of these steps:

Connect the SFP from the switch to the server.

Add the SFP as an uplink. Keep all settings as default:

Load balancing: Route based on originating port ID
Network failover detection: Link status only
Notify switches: Yes
Failback: Yes

Then, using the esxi host client, once I'm sure the vSwitch sees the uplink, make the 10gb SFP the primary by moving it to the top of the Failover Order list.

Is there more to it than that? It does't look like I need to set up trunking or anything on my switch or the physical server since it's only using one connection at a time.

When I make the SFP the primary, do I lose connection, even for a second? I mean, can I do this on a production server in the middle of the day and no one will notice?

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi,

If I understand, you have an uplink 10Gb and another one if 1Gb?

Do you want to use both in your ESXi management connection? If this is the case, there are no issues. You put the 10Gb as active and the second one as standby and select in the Teaming and Failover the Load Balancing select Use explicit Failover.

This will provide you the redundancy that you need using those 2 uplinks. If the 10Gb goes down, the 1Gb will take over.

Yes it works for any portgroup.
This settings is if you want redundancy, in case on is down, the other will take over. But you can also put both active no issues. One is down, the other continues to work.

if is performance vs balance, then you need to select a different teaming.

Hi. Just realized I may have prematurely marked it as answered. I want to change not my Management Uplink but my uplink to which my VMs are connected. The result will be the same? I can swap which one is the primary, and if one goes down it should immediately fail over to the other without interruption?
