Changing lsisas to vmscsi on an EFI guest

I've done this a million times before.  Add a 2nd SCSI adapter, make it vmscsi, shutdown, change the 1st adapter from lsisas to vmscsi, boot up, profit.  Works every time.

Now I have a VM where Windows utterly refuses to boot from a vmscsi adapter.  2nd adapter is set as vmscsi, driver is installed, Windows sees the 2nd adapter and the attached disk.  All systems are go.  Boot process begins but after 15 seconds or so it BSODs with INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

This particular VM is EFI -- I've only worked with BIOS in the past.  Does this change the procedure?
