Cannot delete old snapshots of vCenter 6.5

Hello All,

Can you help me with with issue from below.

vCenter server has some old snapshot and when I try to delete I receive error message: A general system error occurred: vim.fault.GenericVmConfigFault

I have already tried to shutdown the VM and login to the host and delete from there but, unsuccessful.

Tried to clone the VM, but since its a vCenter and its powered on and clone operation cannot be done also because of locked files etc.

Can you give some advice please

Thank's in advance. vcntr.JPG

Here is the actions taken from VMware engineer for deleting the snapshots.

> Created a 'temp' folder.
> Moved the vmsd and the vmsn files to the temp folder.
> Performed a Delete All. It completed successfully.
> Consolidation was required.
> Since this is a vCenter server, Please perform the Consolidation during Off business Hours to avoid any performance impact on the vCenter Server.

I believe Solution 1 is not an option since all the .vmdk's has some data.

Best option will be trying with vCenter converter.

Please download the VM's .vmx, .vmsd, and vmware.log file from the datastore, compress/zip these files, and attach the resulting .zip archive to a reply post.

Hi,

does the datastore have enough free space?

Best regards!

Hi,

Yes, datastore has around 170 GB storage and I have also tried to migrate the vCenter to another datastore with bigger storage and then delete the snapshots, but failed again.

Best Regards

For me what worked in the end was moving the *.vmsn file only and letting the *.vmsd file stay. Thanks for the hint!

Same issue, also saw the following error when trying to delete the snapshots from PowerCLI:

Remove-Snapshot : 8/31/2022 12:20:53 PM Remove-Snapshot The object 'vim.vm.Snapshot:snapshot-1758' has already been deleted or has not been completely created

In my case this was resolved with a simply storage vMotion, all the phantom snapshots were removed and I was able to take and delete new ones again.

That worked for me. thanks.

moved .vmsd and .vmsn files to temporary folder, and clicked remove all snapshot then consolidated.

After moving both file types in the solution I still could not successfully delete the snapshots.  I ran consolidation which took a very long time but did complete and removed the snapshots as part of the process.  Thanks for the help.
