Since you are still using the "old" vSphere Client, this can be done in the Datastore Browser window.

VMSN is VM memory snapshot file.

I'd check the content of the VM directory from ESXi console or SSH (don't use datastore bowser it doesn't show all VM files)

And of course available disk space.

Hi

This seems to be an issue with vmsn file.It would be great if you can attach the vmware.log from the affected machine for further analysis

Hello,

This is the vmware.log for this VM (srv-adm)

Welcome to the Community,

Please login to the host's console (e.g. using putty), run ls -lisa in the VM's folder, and post the output in a reply.

Thats a different VM ? The first screenshot is about SRV-PEDA, the directory listing from SRV-ADM ?

I see SRV-ADM has 4 old snapshot files (*delta.vmdk). We need to know whether they are still used or not.

The console command

cat srv-adm.vmx | grep vmdk

will show that. The output of

cat srv-adm.vmsd

might also be helpful.

I've seen problems with old snapshot vmdks that were left over but not used. When creating a new snapshot it tries to create a new one with the same name and fails because a file with that name already exists.

Depending on what happened/went wrong there may also be problems with locked files.

VM file overview:

-flat.vmdk - base disk

-delta.vmdk - snapshot delta disk

.vmsd - snapshot info

.vmsn - snapshot VM running state (memory etc)

-ctk.vmdk - changed block tracking

.nvram - VM NVRAM/BIOS config

.vmx - VM config file

.vmxf - VM config file (supplemental)

These delta files shouldn't exist, i.e. they should have automatically been deleted along with their descriptor files.

In this case, create a new subdirectory in the VM's folder, and move the stale delta files to this subdirectory. You may delete them later if everything continues to work as expected.

The reason for the error message you get, is that ESXi tries to find an unused .vmdk file name for the new snapshot, and what it is looking for is the descriptor file name. However, even though the descriptor file name is available, the associated delta file name is not, which results in the issue you are experiencing.
