Can an ESXi host boot from an SD if it has more than 512GB of memory

Hey guys and gals,

Our architecture guru asked the above question.  I have never ran into this in either theory or real world.  I googled it and couldn't find any reference.  Does anyone have any insight into this, and can provide a link?  Here is the exact question:

"I just saw something in one of the VMWare training courses that says once an ESXi host goes over 512GB of memory it can no longer boot from an SD device … only from a physical drive or a SATADOM device.  Have you guys ever heard of this kind of limitation or know if it applies to our current version of ESXi?"

Thank you in advance!

That limitation only applies when running vSAN, and there only because the vSAN trace files can overwhelm smaller disks. If you're not using vSAN then there's no such limitation.
