Backup Issue - Creating Snapshot - Veeam BR

Hi there,

I am running esxi 6.5 standalone and using veeam BR version 9.5u4 to backup the vm running on the esxi. But recently i started facing issue, when the vbr trying to backup the vm, it says "Creating Snapshot" and stuck for ever and vm stopped working. Then i have to restart the host to get the vm running back. After restart the host, all vm come up and even backup happening fine.

I raised the concern with veeam forum and they closed the case by saying it is related to the vsphere not with veeam.

Please share your experience, if anyone face the same issue and overcome that.

thanks in advance

Need more information. When it says it's creating a snapshot, what is the host doing? Have you looked at the logs? What have you done to troubleshoot this? All we have to go on here is "VM stopped working" and that's not going to do it, so please perform some basic troubleshooting steps or at least describe what is happening on the ESXi host side.

hi daphnissov

thanks for your time to respond.

During the issue, cannot able to access the affected vm through remote or console. tried to cancel the snapshot process from the host and which cannot be done. Also tried to reboot the affected vms using console and it says already another process is running and failed to restart the vms.

i missed to check the logs during the issue time. i was more concentrated on veeam side because issue started after i created the backup schedule. Is there anyway i can check the back dated logs. please advise.

Observed: The backup task included 3 vms with the same host and same time it is trying to create the snapshot. So now for testing i break the job schedule and running vm level backup for one vm and it is under observation. If issue occurs will collect the logs as well and post again.

if i miss any information, please let me know i will share it.

thanks again Smiley Happy

Hi Anwar,

As far as I know backup solutions use the vmware vmtools VSS sync driver to provide consistent backups, it has to do with quiescing.

I would suggest two or three things:

1- Install or update vmtools (which updates the driver)

2 - Install Veeam Agent in the virtual machines and backup the VM as it was a physical machine, with no snapshots.

3 - Check this service if it's a Windows VM: VMware Knowledge Base

Hope it helps, good luck buddy
