Avoid VM freeze if one of disk is on a crashed datastore

I have two datastores, one for the VMs (local disks) and one for Backups (Qnap NFS).

Some of our VMs have two disks, one for each of the datastores.

Sometimes the Qnap crashes and the datastore goes offline causing the VMs to freeze.

Is there a solution to prevent the machines to freeze when the NFS goes down?

We'd like to not use CIFS or iSCSI

No, and your solution needs to address why your NAS goes offline rather than try to hack around it. Storage needs to be available, and when it's not, VMs don't like that.
