Accidentally converted vm to template in vsphere 5.6. Is my data gone?

I accidentally hit "Convert to template" in vsphere 5.6 on a vm that has a lot of configuration in /etc as well as other important data on the disk (the vm is an identity server, among other things).  I know if I'd Cloned it to Template, the data would still be there, but that's not what happened.

Is there any way to get it back to it's previous state as a vm, with all it's data intact?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Right click on template and choose <convert to Virtual Machine> option.

Just tested in my lab environment and there is no data loss.
