On the datastore browser, if you right click on the .vmdk file and select the 'Copy to' option, it will copy both flat.vmdk and the descriptor file to the destination datastore.

Each disk contains two files, one is the data disk and other one is the descriptor file containing pointer to the data disk. Datastore browser does not show the descriptor file. But from the command line, we will see both the files i.e. VM_Name-flat.vmdk (data disk) and VM_Name.vmdk (descriptor file).

@ as900w thanks for your Query,

The Browse Datastore view is actually a File level access to visualize the VM files of the respective VM.

Each Hard Disk attached to VM is a combination of the (physical Data Disk -Flat.vmdk & Pointer/reference -.vmdk). To avoid the confusion of showing 2 files for each disk attached, the GUI view only shows Descriptor file, and flat.vmdk is hidden and is only visible on the SSH/Shell or Cli modes.

The following are the files that make up a VM,

VMX file   – Configuration file

VMXF file  – extended/Supplementational Configuration details

VMDK Files – Disk related files, includes .VMDK, -delta.vmdk, -rdm.vmds

VSWP File  – Memory overflow (SWAP) file

VMSD File  – Snapshot details

VMSS File  – Memory contents of suspended VM

VMSN File  – Snapshot Files

NVRAM File – BIOS file

vmware.log - VM Log files

Hope this helps.

Regards,

BDV
