vSAN W/Multicast enabled Switch

Hi Gurus, I am a vSAN Newbie and while watching the lecture he said vSAN Hosts needs to be connected to a Multicast capable Switch it's okay but I want to learn more about why it needs so ?

That's somewhat old news, actually. In the latest release of 6.6, multicast is no longer needed so not to worry.

To answer your query why it is needed?

It is how master communicates with the salve in vSAN cluster.

Every time master is elected directory updates occurs for disk groups, disk and objects (major). This traffic is eliminated somewhat using Backup Master.

But it is purely for faster election of master and avoid extended downtime as result of this.

But starting 6.6, you do not need to enable multicasting on switches.

Many thanks to you, so I can say if I have a vSAN cluster of 4 Vxrails  1 of 4 is elected Master to maintain objects.I hope I am right Smiley Happy

Many thanks to you, we don't need to worry when it comes  to 6.6 so did they explained how it will work without the need of a Multicast supported Sw
