vSAN: Format disks to version 13.0, or change object format?

I just upgraded 6 hosts in a vsan cluster from esxi 6.7 to 7.0.1. Now it's time to upgrade vSAN.

It seems I have 2 options:

  1. cluster - configure - disk management - upgrade
  2. cluster - monitor - skyline health - change object format

I did #1 just now; it took like 12 minutes to upgrade all disk groups from v7 to v13...now in disk management I see "All 42 disks on version 13.0 but with older vSAN objects.", and in skyline health I see:

vSAN object format health
Objects Need Format
Object count 61
Total Bytes to Move 130582.67 GB

I suppose it's time for #2?

Well, I just answered my own question. 🙂

About vSAN Object Format (vmware.com)

Looks like it's time to bite the bullet and increase I/O significantly for the next several days!

Actually, step 1 took 32 minutes, and this shows up after it's "done":
