vSAN Aplliance embedded license lost after upgrade

Hi all,

can someone confirm that after upgrading a 6.7 vSAN Wintess Appliace to 7.0 U1 (during a vSAN stretched cluster 6.7 to 7.0 U1 upgrade) the embedded license is lost and is necesarry distribute a new one?

Yes that is "normal". You need to deploy a new, true v7 U1 or U2 appliance and switch to that. Then delete the old, now unused witness and the error is gone.

Has nothing to do with shared witnesses by the way. It's how vSAN 6.X witnesses behave after being upgraded to v7. They simply lose their license. Hence the need to build a new fresh witness.

Hi, thanks for the asnswer.

I will follow the sequence provided in the article:

- upgrade the current witness to 7.x (lost license, trial start but compliance is ok)

- upgrade on-disk format

- change witness appliance to the new one on 7.x
