migrate vms in/out of director

Is there a way to migrate vms in and out of director back into vcenter? From what I was told at vmworld. When a vm is in director, at the vcenter level, the vms name is some cryptic name that director keeps track of in it's internal database so you can just move the vm around without going through director or director will break the connection.

Also, is there a way to run director using a free version of redhat and not a pay for version? I'm trying to reduce cost. Also, any word yet on how much $$$ director is?

Hi,

If you want to migrate a native vCenter VM to your cloud, you can do that by going to vCD -> Your Organization -> My Cloud, and then on the tool bar press on the “Import from vSphere”. You will have the option to “copy” or “move” the VM.

Now, on the other hand, if you have a VM that has been created and running inside your cloud and you want to move/migrate it out to your vCenter, you can unregister that VM from vCenter and then browse through the datastore to the VMX file and register it again. The reason being is that all the vCD VMs are pinned in the vCenter DB by a special custom filed. The unregister/register thing will remove that field for you. There is another way to do this, but I guess it’s a bit more complicated.

Hope this helps.

Petervanden: either one. I would prefer hot but I can deal with cold.

Dirtdevil,

you could also look at Vizioncore Converter or Novell Platespin Migrate.

But that is when you really want to do a migration action instead off a vMotion like suggested in another reply.

You can store vApp templates in the VCD catalog and roll them out to end users. vApps can be single VM or multi VM.
