No domain join (with guest customisation) with Win2012 R2

vCD Version: 5.2.2

Hi!

We try to roll out Win2012 R2 with our vCD. We installed a fresh copy of 2012 R2 and we imported it in a public vCD catalog. Now we added a vm to a vapp in an organisation, build on the 2012 R2 Template. In the guest customisation we entered all the neccesary data, Change SID, Domain Join data (Domain: subdomain.ourdomain.de, user who can join: ourdomain\username, correct password  ) And we give an different computername and change administrator password.

IP comes from DHCP

Now, if we start the vm for first time, everything work well (but, it takes a very long time to complete) except the domain join. The computername was changed and the admin password was changed. But no domain join Smiley Sad  I wonder about that There is no entry in the guestcust.log for ourdomain.de and no entry in the sysprep log too.

If we manually join to the domain (with same user credentials as above) it works too.

We tryed to give only the username without ourdomain\ in the domain join data ( i've read about that this could be a problem) but it does not help

Any ideas what we should try?

Found the two issues:

1. 2012R2 VM that was the source for the import in vCD was not activated (Windows Activation..) ..it seem that this is required

2. 2012R2 VM was an update installation of a 2008 VM ..but then sysprep will not run (saw in %WINDIR%\System32\Sysprep\Panther\  sysprep log). You need a fresh 2012R2 installation

Now everything runs fine

When you manually tried joining the machine manually to domain, was the machine still in DHCP network or you tested with Static Pool ? Hopefully the issue is specific to Domain Join and other factors are working fine no matter how many times we try guest customization and we are not hitting with limit of maximum times we  can re-arm a window system?

  • netsetup.log – Contains information about workgroup and domain membership, please have a look at that logs to know the precise information about steps/failures.
