How many cells do I need?

We have created our first vcd setup with one vcenter and started populating it with organizations and providers.

So far so good, now we want to expand the cloud to use other vcenters in our organization, we have been told we need

to create a separate cell and have a separate instanse of vcd at each of these vcenters, is this true? Can you really only put one vcenter per cell?

Thanks...

If you go back into the administration view of your current cell, you should have the option to "attach another vCenter".

I was told this depends on the scale of overall vCD implementation - in my case where it's for qa/test/build/release and for about 50 engineers they (some vmware specialists) told me one vcd vm is good enough for my size.

But I'd be interested in what to look for, in order to know ahead of time if I'm reaching a limit of some kind.

Hope that helps.

I saw that , but the consultant we had says we need to make cells, and have directors installed at each vcenter

as probably a digression:

my management VMs (vcenter, vcd, db, vshield) currently are on a separate ESX box (non-clustered) outside of the ESX clusters for my test vCloud Director setup.

You say "each vcenter", so I'm curious what the case is for multiple vcenters? Right now I just have one for everything, and just a test setup (but of course, thinking about the end result, and thus, the questions).

That is a legitimate recommendation (and would be from other consultants as well). I was just trying to directly answer your question about connecting more than one VC to a single cell.

Scale always plays a role. As far as things to look for...you could monitor your database, and make sure you are not approaching any configuration maximums. Looking at the config maxes, be sure to consider the least common denominator...meaning, if vCD allows for 128 VM's per vApp....and 500 vApps per Org, then you are looking at 64000 VM's that may be in one VC; vCD limits you to 10000 concurrent powered on VM's as well, so if you configure it to it's maximums, be sure to pay attention to other maximums (i.e. max powered on VMs).
