Getting vimServers trhough vCD API 1.5 fail with NullPointerException.

Hello,

I recently upgraded to vCloud 1.5. In 1.0 when trying to get the vimServers everything worked. Now I get a null pointer exception as can be seen in the log bellow.

Can anyone tell me the reason or give me suggestions where to search for problems?

It seems like the most likely causes for such an error message would be:

  • Trying to perform the API call right after upgrading. (I'm not exactly sure how large the time window would be, but I don't believe it'd be noticibly large unless your VC-to-Cell ratio is very high, your VC-to-Cell communication is bottlenecked, or something along those lines.)
  • Performing the API call after an upgrade without vCD ever being able to access one or more VCs post-upgrade (with the caveat that it seems like the VC would need to be associated with one or more hosts to cause this error; inability to access a VC which had no associated hosts wouldn't cause this problem).

Based on your other post (javascript:;), it sounds like you may be in the latter category. I suspect resolving that issue will resolve this one as well.

The first couse is very unlikely since the issue persist several days after the upgrade.

For the second, they might be related but:

  • the problem How to remove a (not available) vCenter from vCD? manifest itself on 2 different environments.
  • this problem is just on one environment
  • what applies to my env is that during the upgrade one the the vCenter was not accesible from vCD. Note that it is not possible to bring that vCenter back to life.

    Please include a description of this issue (or a reference to this thread) in the Support Request for the How to remove a (not available) vCenter from vCD? issue. Support should be able to assist you with removing the unavailable vCenter, which I would expect to resolve this issue.
