Hi, I have a standard esxi 5.5 with vcenter installed. Only 1 VM. I came on one morning and for whatever reason, I cannot login to the vsphere client in the vcenter. I can login directly to the esxi, but not vcenter. Nothing has changed as I know of, it used to work, the installation is not old. Checked all vcenter and vmware services are started, tried reboot the vcenter server, still the same. The error I have is;
a general system error occured; alias value should not be empty.
I am using the administrator account created at installation, not a domain admin. Multiple posts says to use the local admin account used at the installation, but I have the same error. Anyone has an idea?
Thanks
Well, if someone gets to this post, since nothing useful was suggested in the community, what I will do is uninstall all vcenter applications and re-install and reconfigure everything.
Please check whether the configured Identity Sources are available (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2074760)

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have no idea how to verify if identity source is available. The kb you mention does not say how to verify this. As I understand, even if the active directory identity source is not available, the local admin account created at installation is supposed to still work (am I wrong?), but I get the same error. The kb also mentions that there is no solution for this. Should I reinstall everything?
Thanks

Hi Team,
I know this might be late, but all you probably needed to do is reboot that appliance . Check out my following post: vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 SSO Issues.

I had the same issue on my home lab, a reboot has fixed the issue for me, may be I am lucky. I had to reconfigure my vCenter from the scratch only 2days back as I was not able to log in due to some configuration changes I have made, I would be mighty pissed if I have to do it again.
This is known issue with version 5.5.0 U1.
Update VMware vCenter Server to 5.5.0 U2.
Please check below link with KB Article - ID 2074760
VMware KB: Alias value is empty when attempting to log in to VMware vCenter Server 5
Today I got the same issue ,in my lab.
solution: problem was their in my DNS server. Pl check the DNS server .After resolving that issue I was able to login thru administrator@vsphere.local in Vsphere client.
