First of all is based on how is your infrastructure. I mean if you have all your servers in workgroup (hard to do it but i don't know what you are doing) you can have it with worgroup.
Otherwise if you have active directory deployed then for me there is no reason not to use it. Management is easier, because you don't need to have different accounts for your servers and different accounts for the vCenter.
In general there are no disadvantages for using active directory if AD is already in place of your infrastructure.
