vCenter Windows patches

Is there any documentation or guidelines in regards to if you should install Windows patches on your vCenter server or what patches you should install?

I want to apply security patches but don't want to hose the server.

I think as far as the security patches do not change any current configuration(ports etc) you can always install them. Do not turn on automatic updates. Make sure you download the patches and install only the critical ones (And ones that do not alter the functionality of vCenter)

Is there any official documentation on this? I did some searching but couldn't find anything.

I too could not find any documentation regarding this. I just remember some guys doing it before and the only time i remember something went wrong was when the ports were used by other programs or software.

I guess Ill just snapshot the VM before applying any patches. I was only planning on doing the security patches.

We apply windows security patch evey month for our vCenters from past 2 years without any issues. But get the patch details and review before installing. There are some security updates which are not essential just review no much impact.
