vCenter Windows - Licensing question

Hello,

we are currently moving our Windows vCenter and MS Sql from a physical to a virtual machine(s). The Windows licensing model is confusing me... We want to use Windows Server 2012 R2.

Is the 'Standard' edition enough for this? Or do we need Datacenter?

The future setup should be this:

2x Windows Server 2012 R2 (with failover clustering) for vCenter

1x Windows Server 2012 R2 (FT enabled) for external SQL database

Regards,

Soph1

Hi

Do you currently licence your ESXI hosts with a Windows Datacenter license. If you have a Windows server datacenter licence for the host or hosts that you will be running the vCenter and SQL servers on you are covered. They do not need to be licenced independently.

Yes, but at the moment everything is running on Windows 2008 R2.

We want to migrate to 2012 R2.
