vCenter - What is it?

Ladies & Gentlemen,

I am very new to VMware.  I've done some research on YouTube but still haven't got the concept yet.  I am running ESXi & vShere 5.1.0.  I have 3 virtual machines (APP, EXCH, FILE).  However, there is also a vCenter VM.  My company had another IT person install all of this and I've had no experience with VMware prior.  The vCenter VM has been off since I inherited this network.  I guess my question to you is does it serve any purpose for my network?  Why do I need it?  The network has been running great since it was installed last November with no problems.  Honestly, I'm scared to turn it on just because everything is working so well.  Can anyone offer any advice on what to do with this vCenter VM?  Thanks in advance!

I suggest you to first read this blog post : It is basic about basic difference between :vSphere , ESXi , vCenter , VI client .

Refer:http://www.mustbegeek.com/difference-between-vsphere-esxi-and-vcenter/

Above blog explains in very simple words, perfect for those are new to VMware product.

Once you read, if you have any doubt, please do ask even if it is really trivial.
