vCenter Server Migration from SQL Express to SQL Full Version

Hi,

Today i tried vCenter server DB migration in my lab, after migration vCenter Server service not starting and it gives below error msg.

Windows could not start the VMware VirtualCenter Server on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 2.

Lab Environment:-

1. On System A (Windows 2008 with SP2) vCenter Server 5.5 is configured with SQL Express.

2. On System B (Windows 2012 R2) SQL Server 2014 Full version is installed, on the same server we are installing vCenter Server 5.5.

3. We are keeping host name & IP address same.

Need your assistance.

There's no easy answer without detailed information and log files. However, VMware created several KB articles regarding SQL/vCenter Server migrations (e.g. https://kb.vmware.com/kb/5850444). Did you already check these out for troubleshooting.

It could well be something simple, can you checked through all the event logs, usually there is a hint in there somewhere, maybe odbc settings need changing etc?

make sure you have performed all the steps mention in the KB. Then try to start vCenter services.

If still you face any issue look in vpxd.log file for any errors. if needed attach vpxd.log file here.

Just want to can we migrate SQL 2005 Express to SQL 2012 Full edition.

Currently we are using SQL 2005 Express edition and we are migrating to SQL 2012 Full edition.

Soon will upload the logs.
