vCenter Server DR best practices

Hi,

thought someone had better suggestions out there. hence posting this to vmware community

We have many private virtual platforms for various customers with 1 or more esxi hosts managed by their own vCenter servers. We running vCenter on Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL server 2008 R2 express edition local to VC. All our vCenter and Esxi host is running 5.0 Update 2.

We have few backup options;

1) Backup virtual machine with sql databases using backup products (VEEAM, eVault etc)

2) Snapshot virtual machines but vCenter being the core for snapshot to work, not sure how helpful this would be if OS is corrupted.

3) Clone VC and keep a copy as standby.

Any suggestions??

While backing up/replicating vCenter SQL with VB&R please keep following recommendations in mind:

  • Enable Application-aware image processing functionality, which allows Veaam Backup and Replication to create transactionally consistent backup of a VM running VSS-aware applications (such as Active Directory, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Exchange, Sharepoint) without powering them off. Not only does it ensure successful VM recovery, as well as proper recovery of all applications installed on the VM without any data loss, but also it notifies applications about them being backed up.
  • Enable transaction log truncation. VB&R provides advanced options for controlling truncation of transaction logs so that you can ensure correct backup of applications that use transaction logs. The logs can be truncated after every backup job, every successful backup or not truncated at all.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
